7digital is a business-to-business music technology company founded in January 2004 in London by Ben Drury and James Kane. It launched as a digital music services provider, initially building download stores and later running a direct-to-consumer store from 2005. In 2008 it became one of the first European retailers to offer DRM-free MP3s licensed from all major labels. Over time the company shifted its focus away from its own consumer storefront toward supplying the underlying infrastructure that other companies use to power their own music products and experiences.
Today 7digital positions itself as an infrastructure supplier rather than a consumer brand. It offers access to a large licensed music catalogue, rights and licensing management, and content-delivery and metadata services through an API, enabling clients to launch download, streaming, radio and white-label music offerings. Its platform has powered music features for partners across consumer electronics, fitness, gaming, social media and streaming, with reported clients over the years including Samsung, BlackBerry, HMV, Onkyo, Triller and Fender, spanning many territories.
7digital was venture-backed early on, with investors including Balderton Capital, and HMV took a stake in 2009. In May 2014 it became publicly listed as 7digital Group plc through a reverse takeover of AIM-quoted UBC Media Group. In February 2023, US-based B2B music company Songtradr agreed to acquire the business in a deal valued at roughly £19.4 million (about $23.4 million); the acquisition completed on 30 March 2023, and 7digital now operates as a subsidiary of Songtradr.
