AMAR (Associação de Músicos, Arranjadores e Regentes), also known as AMAR Sombrás, was founded on 26 September 1980 as one of the first Brazilian collective management organizations created and administered by music creators — composers, arrangers and conductors. It emerged from the SOMBRÁS movement of the early 1970s, which challenged the control of the Brazilian copyright system by major conglomerates and fought for author autonomy. AMAR is a non-profit entity headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, with branch offices in São Paulo, Brasília and Salvador.
As a member association of ECAD (Escritório Central de Arrecadação e Distribuição), AMAR represents its affiliated musicians and arrangers within Brazil's centralized copyright-collection system. ECAD handles the nationwide collection and distribution of public-performance royalties; AMAR's role is to affiliate rights holders, register their works and ensure members receive their proportional share of distributions. The association is authorized by Brazil's Ministry of Culture.
AMAR is a member of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC). Through reciprocal agreements with counterpart organizations worldwide — including societies in the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom — it enables cross-border collection for its members' works exploited abroad.
