APA (Autores Paraguayos Asociados) was established on 1 July 1951 in Asunción, Paraguay, making it one of the oldest music collective management organizations in Latin America. It operates as a private, non-profit civil entity founded in accordance with the principles of the Berne Convention, and it acquired its own premises in central Asunción in 1955.
APA administers both performing and mechanical rights for literary, artistic, scientific and musical works — covering published and unpublished material in any format, including phonomechanical and audiovisual recordings. The society collects royalties from commercial users of protected works, distributes them to its affiliated members and provides ancillary member benefits; it also operates a music school recognized by Paraguay's Ministry of Education and Culture.
APA is a member of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) and maintains reciprocal representation agreements with foreign collective management societies worldwide. Through these agreements it represents the international repertoire in Paraguay and ensures that Paraguayan authors' rights are collected abroad, working in coordination with DINAPI, Paraguay's national intellectual property directorate.
