CAPASSO (Composers, Authors and Publishers Association) is a non-profit mechanical-rights licensing agency incorporated in 2014 and headquartered in Rosebank, Johannesburg. It was established when SAMRO and NORM transferred their mechanical-rights licensing operations to a dedicated body, following a recommendation by South Africa's Copyright Review Commission.
CAPASSO administers mechanical rights exclusively — licensing musical reproduction across digital downloads, streaming, physical manufacture, synchronisation and audiovisual uses — on behalf of music publishers and composers. Through membership of BIEM and CISAC and bilateral agreements, it extends mechanical-rights coverage across Southern Africa.
The organisation has grown into the region's principal mechanical-rights hub, distributing tens of millions of rand in royalties, and runs a corporate social-investment programme supporting the local creative sector.
