It was built as a deliberate alternative to the traditional publisher: rather than acquiring copyrights, Kobalt positions itself as a technology-driven service business that administers rights on behalf of songwriters and publishers, who retain ownership of their work. From the outset the company invested in software to track, collect, and report on the vast number of micro-royalty payments generated by digital music, aiming for greater speed, accuracy, and transparency than incumbent societies and majors.
The company's core activity is publishing administration, paired with AMRA, its in-house global digital collection society, which licenses and collects digital mechanical and performance royalties directly worldwide. Kobalt provides songwriters and publishers with an online portal that reports earnings at a detailed, near-real-time level, a central part of its transparency pitch. It historically ran adjacent businesses too, including AWAL, a services company for independent recording artists, and Kobalt Neighbouring Rights; both were sold to Sony Music, leaving Kobalt focused on publishing administration and collection.
Kobalt raised repeated venture and growth funding, including investment from Google Ventures and MSD Capital in 2015. In February 2021 it agreed to sell AWAL and Kobalt Neighbouring Rights to Sony Music Entertainment for $430 million, a deal completed in 2021 and cleared by the UK Competition and Markets Authority in its final report of March 2022. In September 2022, private equity firm Francisco Partners acquired a controlling stake in Kobalt in a transaction valuing the company at roughly $750 million, with founder Willard Ahdritz retaining equity.
