Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) is the UK’s main music licensing company, for over 120 000 performers and recording rights holders. Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) has been licensing recorded music in the UK since 1934. PPL is a copyright collective, a private limited company founded by Decca Records and EMI. Its role is to manage collective rights for sound recordings on behalf of its members and distribute the fees collected to rights holders (record labels and artists). PPL licenses radio stations, television broadcasters and some digital media services to play recorded music in the UK as part of their programming. PPL PRS Ltd, joint venture gathering PPL and PRS for music, also issues music licenses for businesses and organizations’ premises. The Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) role is to collect music licensing royalties and distribute them to rights holders, based on the use of their music.
