RAO (Russian Authors' Society) is an all-Russian non-governmental organization founded on 12 August 1993 by Russian authors and their heirs, in accordance with the Russian Law on Copyright and Related Rights. Based in Moscow, it is the largest collective management organization in Russia by authors' remuneration collected and distributed, and received state accreditation for collective management in 2008.
RAO primarily administers performing rights — public performance, broadcasting, cable retransmission and communication to the public. Its mandate is to license use of musical, literary and dramatic works in venues such as theatres, concert halls, retail outlets and broadcasters, then collect and distribute royalties to rights holders.
RAO has been a member of CISAC since 1993 and maintains reciprocal representation agreements with more than 70 foreign CMOs, collectively representing tens of thousands of Russian authors and a large body of foreign rights holders.
