SACEM (Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique) is France's collective management organization for music creators and publishers. Founded in 1851 by songwriter Ernest Bourget together with Victor Parizot and Paul Henrion, following Bourget's landmark 1847 fight to be paid for the public performance of his works, it is one of the oldest collecting societies in the world. SACEM licenses the use of musical works, collects the royalties owed to its members, and distributes those sums back to them. It operates as a non-profit cooperative, owned and governed by the creators and publishers it represents.
SACEM is structured as a member-owned society bringing together authors, composers and music publishers. It licenses public performance and reproduction of works across radio, television, streaming platforms, live venues, retail and other users, collects the corresponding fees, and redistributes them to rights holders after identifying the works used. Its membership is highly international, spanning creators of many nationalities. Beyond France, SACEM manages repertoire and collects royalties through reciprocal representation agreements with counterpart collecting societies around the world, allowing members' works to be monetized when used abroad.
SACEM reported collections of around 1.6 billion euros in 2024, an 8% increase year-on-year, with more than 40% of revenue coming from digital sources such as streaming and social networks. Local collections held steady at 852 million euros while international revenue grew 15% to 749 million euros. The society distributed 1.38 billion euros to roughly 510,000 rights holders (up 12%) and welcomed 13,400 new members in 2024, nearly 27% of them under age 25. SACEM has increasingly invested in digital licensing and data infrastructure to process high-volume online usage.
