SACIM was founded in 1980 by musician Lito Barrientos under the name Sociedad de Autores Compositores e Intérpretes Musicales en El Salvador. It is the first collective management organisation established in El Salvador and administers copyright for musical works. In 2004 it was re-registered as a Cooperative Society under Salvadoran commercial law, operating as SACIM EGC (Entidad de Gestión Colectiva).
The organisation issues licences to businesses making commercial use of musical works — covering public performance, broadcasting, and online use — and distributes royalties to national members and to foreign rights holders in countries with which SACIM maintains reciprocal representation agreements, including the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and South American territories.
SACIM is affiliated with CISAC, enabling it to manage international repertoires for El Salvador territory. It also runs social and cultural programmes including music production and educational initiatives for its member community.
