SIAE (Società Italiana degli Autori ed Editori, the Italian Society of Authors and Publishers) is Italy's collective management organization for copyright. It was founded on 23 April 1882 in Milan by a group of writers, composers, playwrights and publishers, with an early music committee that famously included composer Giuseppe Verdi. Today headquartered in Rome, SIAE is a non-profit public economic entity with an associative structure. Its core mission is to protect creative works and administer copyright on behalf of its members, licensing the use of protected repertoire and collecting and distributing the royalties owed to the authors and publishers who created it.
SIAE manages rights across a wide range of creative fields, including music, cinema, theatre, radio and television, online works, opera, ballet, literary works and visual arts. It licenses users, collects the resulting fees and redistributes them to rightsholders through a nationwide territorial network. Membership is renewed annually and, as of recent figures, covers more than 125,000 authors and publishers; the fee structure offers free membership to authors under 30, startups under two years old, and members over 80. Internationally, SIAE is a member of CISAC, the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers, which it joined in the 1920s, enabling reciprocal representation of repertoire worldwide.
SIAE is among the largest collecting societies in the world by copyright revenue, ranking sixth globally according to CISAC's Global Collections Report. In 2025 the society surpassed the one-billion-euro revenue threshold and distributed €849 million in royalties to its members. Its current leadership, in place since 2022, comprises President Salvatore Nastasi and CEO Matteo Fedeli, who have overseen a period of modernization of the organization's services and governance.
