SICAM (Sociedade Independente de Compositores e Autores Musicais) was founded on 7 July 1960 as a non-profit civil association, dedicated to the moral and economic defence of copyright and related rights for composers and musical authors. Headquartered in São Paulo, with a secondary office in Rio de Janeiro, it was established with an emphasis on independence, serving as an alternative affiliation option for Brazilian composers seeking autonomous representation.
As a member association of ECAD (Escritório Central de Arrecadação e Distribuição), SICAM operates under Brazil's copyright law (Law 9.610/98, amended by Law 12.853/2013), which mandates centralized collection of public-performance royalties through ECAD. SICAM affiliates composers and authors, registers musical works and phonograms, and distributes royalties derived from public performance. As of the early 2020s it reported more than 22,000 affiliated members.
SICAM is a member of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) and maintains reciprocal agreements with international societies for cross-border rights collection. It holds mandate power from its members for the judicial and extrajudicial defence of their rights.
