SPAC (Sociedad Panameña de Autores y Compositores) was founded on 24 September 1972 and obtained legal recognition in 1973. The society originated as a collective of authors and composers working in traditional Panamanian music (música típica), seeking to protect vernacular and folkloric works. In 1996 it obtained its license to operate as a collective management entity under Panamanian copyright law.
SPAC administers both performing and mechanical rights, managing authorizations for the public use of musical works across a broad range of user categories — including dance venues, discotheques, bars, hotels, and radio and television broadcasters. The society negotiates licensing terms, collects royalties and distributes remuneration to its members, serving as the link between creators and commercial users of protected works in Panama.
SPAC is a member of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) and maintains reciprocal representation contracts with dozens of sister societies worldwide, enabling cross-border royalty collection for its members' works. It took part in the 2018 regional agreement that closed a long-standing pay-television copyright gap in Central America.
