SUISA is the collective management organisation (CMO) for authors' rights in music in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Structured as a non-profit cooperative society, it manages the rights of composers, lyricists and music publishers, collecting licence fees whenever their works are performed publicly, broadcast, streamed or reproduced, and redistributing the proceeds to rightsholders as royalties. Its roots reach back to 1923 with the founding of its predecessor, MECHANLIZENZ; the organisation adopted the name SUISA on 1 January 1942 under the Swiss federal legislation on the collective administration of authors' rights. It is headquartered in Zurich, with additional offices in Lausanne and Lugano.
As a cooperative, SUISA is owned by its members. It represents over 45,000 composers, lyricists and music publishers across all genres, and through reciprocal agreements with more than 100 sister societies worldwide it administers the repertoire of roughly two million rightsholders. After deducting administrative costs, it distributes collected income to entitled parties. For digital rights, SUISA operates through subsidiaries and partnerships: it founded SUISA Digital Licensing AG (based in Liechtenstein) and, in 2017, launched the joint venture Mint Digital Services with US organisation SESAC to license and administer online use of musical works on a multi-territorial, Europe-wide basis.
In 2024, the SUISA Group — comprising the SUISA cooperative and its subsidiary SUISA Digital Licensing AG — reported operating income of CHF 219.5 million, up 6.3% year-on-year, with turnover rising 6% to CHF 209.9 million. Online rights managed worldwide grew 22.8% to CHF 58.1 million, while performance-rights income reached CHF 60.4 million. On the enforcement side, SUISA Digital Licensing filed suit in 2024 against Elon Musk's platform X, alleging it used music without a licence — reflecting the organisation's continued push to secure fair remuneration for authors from digital platforms.
