ZIMURA (Zimbabwe Music Rights Association) was officially registered on 30 March 1982 and is one of Africa's longest-standing collective management organisations. Based in Harare, it operates as a non-profit organisation limited by guarantee, administering music copyright on behalf of composers, authors, producers, and publishers. It currently represents over 4,800 local members and additionally protects the rights of international artists whose works are performed in Zimbabwe.
ZIMURA issues licences to businesses, broadcasters (radio stations, TV networks, and online platforms), and public venues authorising the legal use of musical works. It monitors music usage across platforms to ensure accurate royalty calculation, enforces copyright protections against unauthorised use, and negotiates fair compensation rates. All royalties collected — after administrative costs — are distributed to rights holders according to documented usage data.
ZIMURA is affiliated with CISAC, WIPO, the African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO), and the Zimbabwe Intellectual Property Office. It maintains reciprocal agreements with sister CMOs worldwide, enabling it to collect royalties internationally on behalf of Zimbabwean artists and to remit royalties to foreign rights holders whose works are used in Zimbabwe.
