APRA AMCOS is the alliance of two Australasian music rights organisations serving Australia and New Zealand. The Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA), founded in 1926, administers the performance and communication rights of songwriters, composers and music publishers. The Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society (AMCOS), established in 1979, manages mechanical rights covering the reproduction of musical works. The two bodies formed an operational alliance in 1997, under which APRA manages AMCOS's day-to-day activities while each retains its own board. Together they represent more than 100,000 members and act as the region's central point for music licensing.
The organisation grants licences to music users — broadcasters, digital platforms, venues, businesses and others — that need to perform, communicate or reproduce copyrighted works. It pools the rights of its members so users can obtain broad access through a single licence, then collects the resulting fees and distributes them as royalties to the relevant rights holders. Performing and communication royalties flow through APRA, while reproduction royalties are handled by AMCOS. APRA is a member of the international body CISAC, and AMCOS belongs to BIEM, connecting Australasian creators to reciprocal networks worldwide.
For the 2024–25 financial year, APRA AMCOS reported record revenue of A$787.9 million, up 6.5% year-on-year, with net distributable revenue rising 7.8% to A$683.4 million. APRA collections surpassed A$500 million for the first time (A$521.3 million), while AMCOS exceeded A$250 million (A$266.6 million). Digital streaming drove much of the growth, accounting for 51.3% of total revenue, roughly double its share in 2020. The group also reduced its expense-to-revenue ratio to 13.26%.
