GEMA (Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte) is Germany's collective management organisation for musical works, representing the copyrights of composers, lyricists and music publishers. It licenses the public use of music and collects the resulting royalties on behalf of its members. The society traces its roots to author organisations formed from 1903 onward and was established in its statutory form in 1933 as STAGMA, adopting the name GEMA in 1947. It is one of the largest music rights bodies in the world.
Members assign their exploitation rights to GEMA, which then licenses uses such as radio and TV broadcasts, streaming, live concerts, and music played in bars, shops and cinemas. It manages both performing rights and mechanical reproduction rights, deducting only administrative costs plus contributions to social and cultural funds before distributing the remainder to rightsholders. GEMA represents roughly 98,000 members and, through reciprocal agreements with sister societies worldwide, the interests of around two million rightsholders. It is a member of the international bodies CISAC and BIEM.
In 2024 GEMA reported income of €1.332 billion, up 4.3% year over year, and distributed €1.133 billion to rightsholders, a 4.7% rise; live performances and public-establishment usage set a record at €502 million. Historically, GEMA blocked many music videos in Germany during a licensing dispute with YouTube from 2009 until a 2016 settlement. More recently it has led legal action on AI: it sued OpenAI (November 2024) and Suno (January 2025), and on 31 July 2026 the Munich Regional Court ruled largely in GEMA's favour against Suno in a landmark generative-AI copyright case.
