SDRM (Société pour l'administration du droit de reproduction mécanique) is the French collective management organization responsible for administering mechanical reproduction rights for authors, composers and publishers. It operates in close association with SACEM, France's authors' and composers' rights society, which owns the large majority of SDRM's shares alongside the publishers' association AEEDRM (Association des éditeurs pour l'exploitation des droits de reproduction mécanique). In practice, SDRM is the arm of the SACEM organization dedicated to the mechanical right, sharing SACEM's facilities and staff while retaining its own legal structure as a société civile.
Mechanical reproduction rights cover the fixing of a musical work onto a physical or digital carrier, as opposed to its public performance. SDRM grants the licenses required to reproduce protected works on discs, CDs, DVDs, CD-ROMs, films and other supports, and increasingly on digital and streaming platforms. It identifies the relevant rights holders, applies the applicable tariffs, collects the corresponding royalties from producers and distributors, and channels them for distribution to the authors, composers and publishers whose repertoire has been reproduced.
SDRM was created in 1935 at SACEM's initiative, after the closure of an outside company to which SACEM had previously entrusted the management of phonographic and radio rights. Since then it has become the central mechanical-rights structure within the SACEM ecosystem and a member of BIEM, the international organization of mechanical rights societies. Its scope has broadened over time to include digital exploitation: in 2022, SACEM/SDRM extended an agreement with Muserk to manage digital mechanical rights in the United States, including with The MLC.
