Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (SGAE) is the main collective management organization for songwriters, composers, playwrights, audiovisual creators and music publishers in Spain. It traces its origins to 16 June 1899, when a group of authors and composers — among them Sinesio Delgado and Ruperto Chapí — founded the Sociedad de Autores Españoles to protect creators from the intermediaries who then dominated Spain's theatrical and musical markets. The society later adopted the SGAE name and today is headquartered in Madrid, in the modernist Palacio Longoria building.
SGAE licenses the public performance, broadcast, mechanical reproduction and digital use of its members' works, collects the resulting royalties and distributes them back to rightsholders. It represents more than 100,000 members across music, audiovisual and dramatic repertoire, and through reciprocal agreements administers rights for millions of creators worldwide. SGAE is a member of CISAC, the international confederation of authors' societies, whose framework governs cross-border collection between national CMOs. The society also maintains representation offices abroad, including in the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Cuba.
SGAE reported record revenue of €393.4 million for 2025 (up from €390.1 million in 2024) and distributed €360 million to more than 97,000 beneficiaries, with digital collections reaching €64.1 million. Its dominant position has drawn regulatory scrutiny: CISAC suspended SGAE's membership on 30 May 2019 over unfair royalty-distribution practices, and Spain's competition authority (CNMC) has fined the society. Following EU liberalization of collective rights (Directive 2014/26/EU), rival Unison entered the Spanish market in 2017, and a Barcelona appeals court ruled SGAE had abused its market position.
