SODRAC, the Society for the Reproduction Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers in Canada, was a collective management organization founded in 1985 and based in Montreal. It administered the reproduction rights (also known as mechanical rights) of songwriters, composers and music publishers, meaning the right to copy or reproduce a musical work. SODRAC was historically strong in Quebec and French-language repertoire, representing thousands of Canadian rights holders as well as international catalogues through reciprocal agreements. It complemented the performing rights collected by SOCAN, covering a distinct slice of the copyright value chain for music creators across Canada.
As a reproduction rights society, SODRAC licensed the copying of musical works in contexts such as CD and record manufacturing, digital downloads, broadcast copies and audiovisual synchronization. It negotiated collective and individual agreements with users of its members' works, issued licenses, collected the corresponding royalties, and distributed them back to the songwriters, composers and publishers it represented. The organization treated creators and publishers on an equal footing and paid each member directly, while extending its coverage internationally through reciprocal deals with reproduction rights societies in other countries.
On 31 July 2018, SOCAN (the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) completed its acquisition of SODRAC, following talks that had gone public in April 2017. The merger made SOCAN the first Canadian organization able to license, track and distribute royalties for both performing and reproduction rights. SODRAC's staff moved into SOCAN's Montreal office, and its activities were integrated as SOCAN's reproduction rights business. As rights holders transferred their reproduction rights to SOCAN, SODRAC was wound down, and reproduction rights are now administered by SOCAN.
