STIM (Svenska Tonsättares Internationella Musikbyrå) is Sweden's collective management organisation for the performing and mechanical rights of songwriters, composers and music publishers. Founded in 1923, it began by collecting concert fees for classical composers before broadening to every genre as radio and, later, digital services grew. Structured as an economic association owned and governed by its affiliates, STIM licenses music on behalf of its members whenever their works are performed publicly, broadcast, streamed or otherwise communicated, then distributes the resulting royalties. It represents more than 100,000 affiliated Swedish music creators and publishers and, through reciprocal agreements, the global repertoire in Sweden.
STIM issues licences to broadcasters, streaming platforms, venues, shops and other music users, collects the fees, matches usage to works and pays royalties to the relevant rightsholders. It relies on reciprocal deals with sister societies worldwide and is a member of CISAC, the international confederation of authors' societies. For multi-territory online licensing, STIM co-owns ICE (International Copyright Enterprise) together with the UK's PRS for Music and Germany's GEMA; ICE was established by STIM and PRS in 2007, with GEMA joining as a shareholder, and its integrated licensing and processing hub launched in 2015 to manage combined repertoires across borders.
STIM has reported successive record years. It collected roughly SEK 3.1 billion in royalties in 2023, up about 14.8% year on year, and paid out around SEK 2.6 billion to authors, composers and publishers. Digital streaming has become a leading source of revenue, handled largely through the ICE hub. STIM has also engaged publicly with the challenges of generative AI for music creators, addressing rights and remuneration questions in its reporting as automated tools reshape how music is made and used.
